How To Prevent Macbook’s Battery Life Degradation

[Useful Tips For Long Battery Life]

Keeping your laptop battery healthy is an important part of keeping your laptop healthy. If you own a macbook, these tips will help you in determining the health of your laptop, and preventing it from degrading further.

Before you maintain the health of your battery, you need to know the health of your battery. Every macbook battery can function for up to 1000 cycles. One cycles means draining the battery from 100% to 0%. You can do it in one go, or in three to four charging installments.

To know the cycle number and battery health of your macbook, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the “Apple Icon” on the menu bar, located on the top left corner.
  2. Click on “About This Mac” and then on “System Report”.
  3. On the menu to the left, go to the “Hardware” category and select the “Power” option.
  4. All the power information will be displayed for you. Find the “Health Information” category.

Here you will be able to see the number of cycles your battery has been through and the health status. If your battery is functioning properly, it will display “Normal” as status. If you are near the 1000 mark, it will display “Replace Soon”. If your battery is already suffering from degradation, it will display “Replace Now”. If the degradation has started to effect the performance of the laptop, it will display “Service Battery” which is a major alert and should not be ignored any further.

Getting the battery serviced is a good thing, since it can prevent further damage. If neglected, the damage could be extensive and the repair/replacement would be expensive.

For those who are lucky enough to get a “Normal” reading, here are some tips that might help you keep that status for a longer period of time.

  1. Use your device while charging, to help reduce the cycle count.
  2. Remove your laptop case (if any) during charging as certain cases are known to trap heat and cause damage to your battery.
  3. Always store your laptop in a cool, moisture-free environment with a temperature of less than 90°F (32°C).
  4. Keep your display brightness low.
  5. Avoid exposing your laptop to extreme temperatures. The ideal temperatures range is approximately 62°-72°F (16°-22°C).
  6. Adjust the Energy Saver preferences to consume less battery.
  7. Keep the software updated, as certain patches can help you extend battery life.

With these tips, you will be able to keep the battery life of your laptop healthy and running for a long time.
